Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure

At Triad Cosmetic Dentistry, DDS we strive to provide our patients with the latest and greatest in dental technology. We are always seeking to improve our treatments by providing solutions that are easier or less painful to our patients. One of the latest technologies we offer our High Point and surrounding areas patients, here in our office, is Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, or LANAP.

As a Member of the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry and a certified provider of LANAP, Dr. Macdonald can provide patients with an alternative to the often-dreaded, traditional treatment for periodontal disease.

LANAP is a newer technology which provides patients a relatively pain-free alternative to the scaling and flap surgeries of traditional periodontal therapy. While still highly effective, traditional periodontal therapies can be painful and time-consuming, not to mention they don’t stimulate stem cells to help with regrowth in bone loss. With LANAP, patients spend less time in therapy, less time recovering and generally see better results.

How Does LANAP Work?

New Laser Assisted Technology Archdale

LANAP uses a laser called the PerioLase® MVP-7™, which is about the width of three human hairs in size. During the process, the laser is inserted between gum tissues and the patient’s tooth to remove harmful or damaging bacteria that has settled in pockets surrounding the teeth. The laser helps obliterate inflammatory cells around the tooth, opening space between the tooth and the gum and allowing the dentist to scrape out any excess bacteria with hand tools. All of this is completed without ever having to cut or tear the gums. Once the bacteria has been removed using a combination of the laser and hand tools, the laser forms a gel-clot to reattach the gums to clean tooth surface, adjust any bite trauma and the new attachment begins to regenerate and heal.

How Long Does LANAP Take?

Unlike traditional periodontal therapies, this procedure can be completed in two 2-hour sessions, compared to the common four sessions. Additionally, because LANAP requires no cutting or sewing of the gums, only local anesthesia is required, which allows patients to recover shortly after. Most patients will feel well enough to go back to work, resume regular activities and drive themselves home after the procedure. Healing around the gums may take a few days, and patients may want to stick to soft foods for a few days after the procedure, but in general, this is a fairly quick, non-invasive process.

What Are the Benefits of LANAP?

In addition to being relatively quick and pain-free, this form of treatment is also highly effective. Most patients that opt for this form of periodontal therapy remain stable for many years after. Additionally, this form of treatment places an importance on correcting any occlusal problems, or problems with the patient’s bite, a key factor of periodontal disease. Addressing occlusion can help with other problems such as sleep apnea, headaches, neck aches and more.

At Triad Cosmetic Dentistry, we pride ourselves in providing patients in the High Point area with new technology to improve their dental care.
